A picture's worth a 1,000 words: Narrative Still Life

In Language Arts, a personal narrative essay tells the story of the author in carefully crafted words but how do you tell a visual story in a photograph? SPHS students were challenged to figure out a way to tell a story about themselves through a Narrative Still Life photograph. Students chose 3-5 objects that told a cohesive story about some aspect of their personality.  Students learned about lighting, setting up a still life and how the tiny details can make all the difference.

Seeing Balance in All Around

Students were given the challenge of finding Symmetrical, Asymmetrical and Radial Balance in their everyday surroundings. This proved to be quite a challenge for the classes, but they managed to find it all!

Lines, lines, lines! They're everywhere!

I always like to start the photography school year with the very basic of Elements of Art, the Line.  Students scoured our campus in search of lines as a focal point and came up with some fantastic results.

A new year in SPHS Photography!

The 2014-2015 school year started with a bang for the Photography program! We had so much student interest that we were able to add a 3rd full class period this year.

 

With over 90 photography students, I have been seeing some fantastic work from my classes. I'm looking forward to a year of continued success!

Character Portraits

Students in the SPHS Photo classes worked with partners to study the art of Portraiture.  Their goal was to not only capture a friend's appearance but to offer a glimpse of their personality.

Kids love to run around...kids love cameras...is there a better way to learn about shutter speed than to ask the SPHS photo students to capture each other in motion! (also a very fun way to learn about the many secret talents our kids possess that would never happen in a normal classroom: juggling, back flips, flying karate kicks just to name a few!)

Narrative Still Life

A narrative still life is an chance for the photographer to carefully chose objects that tell a story.  SPHS students were given the task to create an artistic still life that tells a story about themselves.
